A book that gets your heart racing and then suddenly the author cuts you off ruining the moment. I hated the beginning Jun 12, Carl Bluesy rated it it was ok.
This was one bad book. You get a good look at how big of a jerk I Ernest Hemingway is capable of being in this text. He goes back on promises made by making this story and those people who is helped him in the past under the bus within its text. Sep 09, Sylvie Spraakman rated it it was amazing. Just funny! I don't even get all the references, because I'm not a s era author, but poking fun at establishment and pretentiousness resonates with all generations.

The story follows two grown men, who work at a pump factory in Michigan…. Both of these men share one thing in common…. They are romantically desperate as hell and searching for love. He befriends a couple Indians he runs into on the streets during a night stroll around town and ends up finding himself in a little pinch.
Trouble always seems to find guys like Yogi this applies to real life, as well …. Perhaps that is why he makes the story interesting. A place where single women seem to be on the prowl for musclebound studs, but will settle for whatever they can get! The comical aspects, aside from Yogi getting his ass kicked by a bunch of Indians, are mostly on Scripps end…. You end up feeling sorry for the women who come into his life and soon realize his ex-wife probably had good reasons for leaving his ass.
I will say this…. A lot of people have labeled this book as being dull, amateur, and a waste of time…. But read the book with an open mind, forgetting who the author is or the reviews you have read prior. Personally, I enjoyed it.
I liked the mood, the atmosphere, the coldness of the winter air when Scripps is taking his long walks, the background stories you learn of each character, and the small town life captured around Christmas time.
The story was a bit depressing, but then so is life! Look at it this way…. Give it a chance. If it was longer than pages, I would dropping this rating down to 2 stars. The fact that you can read this entire book on a Sunday morning, sitting on the couch with your coffee in hand and be somewhat entertained, justifies a 3 star rating. Aug 25, Corey rated it really liked it.
What an odd, un-Hemingwayesque novella. At times I thought I had fallen into a Nathanael West absurdist comedy. I know Papa wrote it as a parody of Sherwood Anderson, but, not knowing Anderson's work well enough to 'get it,' I still thought this slim book a droll delight.
May 08, Gary rated it really liked it. This book made me laugh outloud, numerous times. It's quite different then most Hemingway. It's not a serious book, it's kinda goofy, and I thought it was great fun. Feb 26, Miya rated it did not like it. What a bad bad book! I understand that is the point. So in that regard, Hemingway succeeded. But man. Taking on a side project to read all of Hemingway's major works in chronological order this year.
Started with his first published novella, even though I knew it's not well received. Now that it's out of the way, I'm ready to get to the better stuff. Why am I taking on Hemingway? The importance of the literary canon and whatnot, I guess Dec 21, Dan rated it it was ok. I read this on the redeye and I wasn't really paying attention because Dennis Rodman was making a ruckus by the bathrooms. At any rate, I don't think satire was Hemingway's thing.
If you liked this, make sure to follow me on Goodreads for more reviews! Well that was unexpected - breaking the fourth wall so to speak and filled with humour and very short, everything I did not expect in a Hemingway, which goes to show you should read yourself and not listen to overindulged geezers banging on about somebody with their snooty noses stuck up in the air.
Anyway a decent read and the Hemingway journey progresses well. The Sun Also Rises is up next. An easy read, absurd, and one of his lesser works. At least it killed time at an airport. Jan 21, Jay rated it it was ok Shelves: hemingway. At the time he was writing the piece, Hemingway was also in the midst of a marital crisis involving his wife, Hadley, and Pauline Pfeiffer, who was actively stalking him and whom he would eventually marry.
Almost at the end of the story Diana seems the clear looser: Only three of them in the beanery now. Mandy was talking. Leaning on the counter and talking. Scripps with his eyes fixed on Mandy. Diana made no pretense of listening now.
She knew it was over. It was all over now. But she would make one more attempt. One more gallant try. Perhaps she could still hold him. The script could have been taken verbatim from the actual drama that was taking place with Hemingway, Hadley and Pauline in the late s in Paris and that Hemingway would recount years later in A Moveable Feast.
In this single volume Hemingway viciously attacks Sherwood Anderson and callously exposes his own marital crisis. The people Hemingway attacked are all dead as is Hemingway. What is left for a contemporary audience is a quick dalliance in savage and calculating parody. No Mr. You are rewarded for putting up with harsh reality. When the main characters are introduced to each other this movie changes.
The dialogue is fascinating. The plot is introduced quickly yet gently, and completely sucks you in. You're on a creepy ride which you think might break down at any moment But it doesn't. The movie really keeps momentum and leaves you with a satisfying experience. The characters are fleshed out well and the "horror" part eases in smoothly.
All in all, I would watch this movie again just to see my loved ones react to it. Watch this movie, and be positively surprised, you have just found yourself a little gem.
